Described as “a tenor to watch” and praised for his “ardour and Italianate resonance” (Opera Magazine), British tenor Simon Mascarenhas Carter is a member of the Opernstudio at the Wiener Staatsoper for the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 seasons. 

Simon studied at the Royal College of Music as a Leverhulme Arts Scholar under Patricia Rozario OBE, and has recently appeared at the Glyndebourne Festival, where he created the role of Police Officer I in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s The Railway Children (world premiere), performed the role of Echo in L’Orfeo and covered Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos. Other recent roles include Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) and Ferrando (Così fan tutte).

His upcoming roles at the Wiener Staatsoper include Tamino in Geheimmission Zauberflöte für Kinder, Erster Priester in Die Zauberflöte, Un servo d’Amelia in Un ballo in maschera, and Oberhexe/Billinger Jakob in Die kleine Hexe.
